Very little movement in the standings this week as the Fox’s side moved above the Brock Soc A and no other changes in position were achieved. They recorded a 7-6 win at the Brockley Social against the A side. The Fox’s team are fast becoming the 7-6 specialists as another nip and tuck event proved. Talking of nip and tuck, Rebecca Adlington declared herself pleased with her nose job after the Commonwealth Games publicity. Although her post- race interviews were less ‘nippy’ than Sharron Davies’ before her, at least she no longer looks, in the words of the great Frankie Boyle, like you are looking at her in the back of a spoon!
That is a compliment, or as near as you are going to get to one in this blog, and coincidentally the Nap A travelled with a full complement of players to the Maple Tree after last week’s shortfall and sadly lost again, going down 6-7 in a close encounter that keeps the Penge side firmly in fourth spot. They play the Fox’s at home next week in a mid-table clash with last leg decider written all over it, if I am any judge, so watch for a 10–3 one-sided drubbing in Bovill Road for one side or the other.
The other Penge team from Royston Road remain at the top and it appears that they are becoming acclimatised to the altitude now. They beat the Brock Soc B 11–2 in the Club the world forgot, and this was enough to keep them on the top of the pile. The Brock B undoubtedly worn out by the journey, will hope for a less exhausting outing next week when they travel to the Cyphers club, also a challenge to find, looking to add more substantially to their points tally. The Penge pinnacle pioneers have two games in their last 5 against the struggling Napier B and they will be looking to secure a good return from these games against the potential ‘kingmakers’ of this summer league.
It is fair to say that the result of the night was the Brick A travelling to the refurbished Napier and beating the B side 12–1. It is questionable whether the B side were dazzled by the new white tiles in the spanking new facilities, but they had a bad Thursday, admittedly not as bad as Cliff Richard, but unpleasant nonetheless. Incidentally, Cliff may have been on the internet, but clearly is not keeping up with the news, as it was announced he has employed Max Clifford's lawyer to defend him! As a decision that bears comparison with LVG's transfer policy in pre-season. The Brick A closed the gap at the top to just one point and must face the run-in now with renewed optimism, like Katie Price slipping on one of her wedding dresses or the latest engagement rock. Their double-header games against the Maple Tree starting next week will be pivotal in this season of fluctuating fortunes and most likely the deciding factor in the title race.
In any normal week a 10–3 win would be a decent result, but despite this the Brick B lost ground on the top two after meeting the Cat Cyphers at home. The Cyphers have played the top three in consecutive weeks and picked up 3 points on each occasion, they will be looking at the rest of their fixtures with a little more relish and must be hoping for a strong finish to the season. The Brick B have had a sticky spell of late, comparable to Stevie G’s end of season exploits and need a huge effort to force their way back into contention with fixtures running out and the opposition showing little sign of faltering as the scouse scally did so memorably and hilariously.
Enjoy the game and remember win or lose on the booze!
