This week one result stood out above all others, yes it was Spain 1 Holland 5.
But in our League it was undoubtably the previously high-flying Napier A crashing at home to a huge 12-1 defeat at the hands of the Maple Tree. In truth, to call this a 'shock' would be akin to describing Sepp Blatter as 'a little dodgy'. As falls from grace go this is on a par with our old friend Felix Baumgartner, who although sponsored by Red Bull fell 27 miles like a stone!
The shockwaves echoed through the league as the former table-toppers found themselves in the bottom 4 as a consequence. Congratulations are due to the Maple Tree for a fantastic win in Bovill Road taking them up to 5th in the standings.
Brockley A lost top spot as a result of the 5-8 scoreline at home to the Fox's. Another fine win on the road for the sly foxes as their good run of form continues. The Brockley A slip to fourth like Uruguay, but unlike them they have a tricky match next, away to the Napier A.
There were no such problems for the Brick A, whose inexorable rise to the summit of the league was finally acheived courtesy of a home victory against the Nap B by a healthy 11-2 scoreline. It has been said that they have CHAMPIONS written through them like a stick of rock, although some other words have been suggested!
The Royston Club, never an easy place to go, (or find, or park, or get a late beer) was the venue for a 9-4 victory for the home side against the Brockley B. This takes the Penge Trades to 3rd place in the pecking order and having played the top 2 already. The Royston Boys are well placed for a tilt at the top spot this season if the doubles are hit and cool heads kept. Brockley B as a result moved further from the bottom 2 as they picked up 4 points on the road.
Brick B moved to 2nd place with a 12-1 win at Catford Cyphers, which was considerably closer than it sounds. As ever the doubles were the deciding factor in most legs. The Brick B scaled the heights of the Cypher's barricades, not to mention the stage, to secure a good win. Their Catford hosts have secured just 4 points from their last 4 games, but must be hoping for more joy in their bottom of the table clash with the Nap B in a fortnight's time.
Don't forget there is no game this Thursday as England play Uruguay on Thurs 19th. Roy Hodgson has achieved a miracle since 2012, turning a team that could not attack, but had a decent defence, into a team that cannot defend, but are able to attack. I think a happy medium is required, but in my experience there is no such thing as a happy medium, she always wants to be a size 10.
Keep smiling and playing with good humour.
(If you can't, try to fake it at least!)
GREAT DARTS!!!!
